GENERAL TOOL AND MACHINE DISCUSSION / Re: Vise Stand - Options??

Brake drum works well for bench grinders and such.... Never had a vice on one. I would guess as long as you don't have anything heavier than the drum in the vice you would be fine.

That's where I'm at....   In a way the bigger diameter would be more stable, and allow me to add sandbags or whatever for weight, but at the same time, it'll likely get in the way.    I don't have to wrench or reef on stuff too often, but there is a need to occasionally!!!  at this point I'm only doing light fab work, but who  knows what I'll get into later on....

Dad and I had a good chuckle last Saturday as we were working dirt and planting with 1980's and 90's equipment while the guy down the road had $500,000+ in machinery sitting idle for 3.5 hours due to guidance outages.............

But he probably laughs at us driving by hand while he is eating his lunch and watching YouTube while harvesting  :P

GENERAL TOOL AND MACHINE DISCUSSION / Vise Stand - Options??

OK,  Don't really have a bench in the shop, I generally use the table saw with a sheet of hardboard on it, when I need a large flat surface.  I don't really want to mount the vise to the toolbox, so I'm planning a stand that I could move around as needed. My driveway is a mix of really old asphalt and gravel....

I have 2 ideas:

A) A $5/10 junkyard special rim/tire filled with concrete (it'd be about 30" in dia and 9" tall)

B) try to find a Steel Budd wheel or Brake drum from a big truck and do the same. (this would be 17" to 24" in dia. and about 7-8" tall)

Thoughts???

How many miles on the old girl?
Getting close to 165K Galaxie. It's my daughter's car, and her job requires her to visit clients throughout her workday. Hence it gets a lot of miles. Given the sorry state of new vehicle quality and complexity these days, this old Highlander is a keeper. She loves it, and it'll run another 100K miles easy.

While I have it, I'll do a fluid service on it as well.

The more we let machines do for us, the less capable we become of doing the work when the machines fail.  With all the self driving and parking stuff being built into cars these days I hate to think how much worse a lot of these drivers are going to become when they have to do the job themselves!

Hopefully technical glitches like this help remind people of the need to maintain certain competencies!
